It is my privilege to welcome you to Himachal Pradesh University which has a picturesque campus spreading across an area of over 200 acres with majestic buildings, rhododendron, silver oak, pine and deodar trees offering a salubrious climate and amiable atmosphere for higher studies and research. The Himachal Pradesh University, a leading teaching and research institution in the state of Himachal Pradesh, was established in the year 1970. It is one of the leading affiliating-cum-residential universities in India. Being far from the main city, the campus has a unique calmness with serene atmosphere, surcharged with pious ethos.
Situated at Summer Hill, a Suburb of Shimla, the University aims at developing students into knowledgeable individuals and worthy citizens with sound character. The prime objective of our university is to disseminate advance knowledge, wisdom and understanding through teaching and research. For achieving its goals, the University intends to promote advance learning through teaching, research and extension programmes. It is inculcating in its students and teachers a consciousness regarding the social needs of the country and prepares them for fulfilling such needs.
The university has 12 faculties out of which eight are campus based. There are 29 departments and more than 18 specialized centres. In terms of quality teaching at postgraduate level, the university is on a sound footing and has ample potential for excellence. Besides running various academic programmes, the university has been carrying out research in the varied fields. The various departments of University have been carrying out research in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Management & Commerce, Literature & Languages and many more areas addressing the issues related to state’s economy and its resources.
The University is concentrating on the development of trained manpower, undertaking research & development activities related to progress of the state and promoting interaction with government & private sector. The university pioneered distance learning education by setting up Directorate of Correspondence Courses in 1971 which has presently emerged as International Centre for Distance Education & Open Learning (ICDEOL). It has established its centre at Noida and is in the process of opening a few more in India & abroad.
The university was awarded with a Centre with Potential for Excellence in Himalayan Studies by UGC in the year 2002. Besides this, the university has a leading Academic Staff Collage. Special assistance has been provided by UGC to departments of History, Physics, Bio-Technology, Chemistry & Bio-Sciences. Its alumni are excelling in all spheres with admirable performance in sports and cultural activities. The University has association with national and international research and academic institutions.
The University is striving hard to have a system of learning which is meticulously intellectual and socially relevant and for this purpose the university has recently prepared its Vision Document- Drishti: Swarna Jayanti 2020. The Vision document will stick to eight goals which have been selected by taking into the strengths & weaknesses of the university and realized after self-introspection and detailed deliberations. While setting up the goals, the main thrust is on fostering of new teaching and research techniques among students to nurture their talent. The Vision Document provides a framework to pursue towards these goals whose implementation will certainly demand complete dedication from all departments and administrative staff.
We have recently composed is ‘Kulgeet’ introduced three academic chairs, launched our own Journal & Newsletter and constituted Alumni Association, besides numerous departmental associations.
I am hopeful that in future the University will promote goal based research, preserve ethical standards in relation to all its goals and actions, undertake academic collaboration and networking with other institutions, both in India and overseas, act as a catalytic agent between academia, government and society, reach out and deepen dialogue with civil society and expand academic, administrative and infrastructural capacities.
